Rust-Oleum Europe has strong North East roots, built on Tor Coatings, the Birtley specialist paints and coatings firm founded 50 years ago by the late Guy Readman OBE.
The business was acquired by RPM International in 2007, and under the banner of Rust-Oleum Europe, its operations have expanded beyond the UK. It is now a major European player in specialist paints, spray paints and industrial coatings for consumer and professional markets.
The company employs more than 400 people at its two Gateshead sites and supplies over 45 countries. The original Birtley plant remains a key R&D and production hub, supported by a purpose-built head office and distribution centre at Follingsby Park, which opened in 2019.
Its leading paint brands include Rust-Oleum, Zinsser and Frenchic (acquired in 2023). In the past year, the firm broadened its consumer offer with the acquisition of Star Brands Group, adding The Pink Stuff to its portfolio.
Under new Group President Tom Lowdon, the company has grown rapidly this year, driven by strong brands, innovation, marketing, and efficient manufacturing and distribution. Its unique, direct-to-consumer ecommerce model and market-first Zinsser B-I-N Aqua primer have been major contributors to that growth.
